How to learn German by yourself (self-study guide)
No classroom, no teacher, no problem. A step-by-step self-study plan to learn German on your own — from your first words to real conversations.
You don't need an expensive course to learn German. With the right structure, self-study works — millions of people have done it. Here's how to build your own path.
1. Set a clear, small goal
“Learn German” is too big. “Hold a 2-minute introduction in German” is a goal you can actually hit. Small wins keep you going.
2. Build a daily loop
- New: learn 10–15 words or one phrase set.
- Review: revisit yesterday's words before adding new ones.
- Speak: say everything out loud, not just in your head.
3. Get input you enjoy
Once you know a few hundred words, add easy listening — slow podcasts, songs, simple videos. Enjoyable input is the secret to staying consistent.
The biggest factor in self-study isn't talent — it's showing up daily. A tool that tracks your streak and reviews words for you removes most of the friction.
