Colors in German
Common German colors vocabulary with English translations and native audio.
Colours (die Farben) are among the first adjectives every German learner meets. They're easy to recognise, but German colours behave like adjectives — so their ending changes depending on where they sit in the sentence.
| German | English | |
|---|---|---|
| rot | red | |
| blau | blue | |
| grün | green | |
| gelb | yellow | |
| schwarz | black | |
| weiß | white | |
| braun | brown | |
| grau | grey |
How to use these words
- •On their own, after the verb sein, colours never change: “Das Auto ist rot.” Before a noun they take an ending: “das rote Auto.”
- •To ask about a colour, say “Welche Farbe ist das?” (What colour is that?).
- •Note the spelling of weiß (white) with ß, and that braun and grau are the usual words for hair and eye colour.
Example sentences
Der Himmel ist blau.
The sky is blue.
Ich habe ein rotes Auto.
I have a red car.
Ihre Augen sind grün.
Her eyes are green.
